The step-by-step instructions in this manual are incredible! Not only are the directions very easy to follow and explicit, by building the steps, you retain where functions and menus are located.
By the second or third chapter, I retained many of the navigational aspects by continually applying and practicing. Also, you are first taught how to do a particular function guided and then are given the opportunity to practice via an exercise Unguided with page references for the “how to” in case you forget how to do the step.
Not only am I learning this tool quickly and efficiently but it is refreshing to see that the book is written following sound instructional methodology. Nice book. It works great for those self teaching on Captivate, but you need a zip program to unzip files to work through the practices.
The book directs readers to a website to download the practice files, but doesn’t tell you how to get a zip program or provide a free one at the website or anyone else.
It’s not always good to download files off the internet and I’m sure if the website was secure or not. It would have been better if the author just included a CD with the book with the files on it. I was required to get this book for an ISD masters program that I am attending. The book does exactly what it says it does. I have been following the tutorials for about 3 months now and I now have a pretty decent working knowledge of Captivate.
I am using Captivate 9 and even though this book was written for Captivate 8, I have not noticed any major changes in 9 that would cause you to not be able to follow along. Hope this helps. A thorough introduction to Adobe Captivate 8, this book is a series of tutorials that walk you through Captivate 8’s basics. It’s full of great tips and instructionally sound. Based on the way the book is written and presented, the author is obviously an experienced instructional designer.
Kevin Siegel’s guide is just right: each lesson is so well planned and linked to other lessons that I experienced just the right amount of “hand holding” and exposure to more advanced features of the application. I gained much confidence.
Since then, I have used subsequent editions to keep up to date with each new version of Captivate. As Captivate has become more robust in features, I think it made sense to break the latest edition into two volumes. I especially like the exercises that allow learners to actually interact with the software while learning how to carry out different processes. I highly recommend it for those who want to learn on their own and at their own pace. The accompanying downloadable examples used in conjunction I’m a Captivate nube so this was a great introduction.

Could anybody tell us, why I need the older Java 6 Version? Captivate 8 now works on my Mac after I applied one of the many patches for Yosemite.
It was a very early patch. I updated to the latest version of Captivate Ver 8. I read elsewhere that the audio in Captivate may not play properly. I use less of Captivate these days, more on Camtasia and Articulate, so I have not tested the Captivate audio on Yosemite but I can say that Camtasia audio does not play properly on Yosemite and this has not been fixed.
I think you should update all patches and versions on Yosemite and Captivate. I did not install Java 6. I just installed the mac version of Captivate 8 and did the Captivate Ver 8. Captivate will not open. What were the patches you applied for Yosemite?

Step zero — the preproduction phase This is the only step of the process that does not involve working with the Captivate application.
