Next, take the Pen Tool and draw a line. Then, hold Shift to make sure the line is straight. In the Swatches Panel , set the stroke color of the line to white. Then, go to the Stroke Panel and set the Width of the stroke to 3 pt. Or right click on the line and select Duplicate. Select the duplicated line. Press and hold Shift and rotate the line to degrees. Now, make another duplicate of the line. Then, hold Shift and rotate this line to degrees. After that, make one more duplicate of the line.

Rotate this line to degrees. Grab the Pen Tool again from the Tools Panel. Make a V on top of the original line. Place the duplicate onto the tip of our other line.

Continue doing this until all the ends of the line have a V shape on them. After that, gran the Pen Tool again. Add some smaller lines to the snowflake to finish out the design of it. Go to the Layer menu and select Expand Stroke. Hold Shift and drag the duplicate to the top left corner. Make sure that part of the snowflake goes past the edge of the artboard.

Now, go back to Artboard 1. Make 3 more duplicates of the snowflake and place them on the other corners of the artboard. Make sure that the snowflakes go beyond the edges of the artboard. Grab the Ellipse Tool from the Tools Panel. This will add a sensation of depth to your drawing. Drawing direction is very important. Brush strokes will behave differently depending on where it starts and where it ends.

Once I have an area defined — in this case her face shape and part of her hair — I start working some details using different brushes to add variation. By taking liberties, I mean that you need to see the inking stage more like an interpretation process rather than a literal tracing-over. I cannot stress enough the beauty of creating my lines using vectors. Both elements features very unique and irregular shapes. The trick when using this Pencil Tool technique is to mentally , follow the final shape you want to draw.

In this case the pencil tries to fill every possible gap… until you change the direction and automatically changes the color fill in the correct way. As you can see, it is not necessary to close the path.

Actually, when you see it step-by-step, seems more complicated than it really is. I wanted to go after a very unique traditional runny-ink look for this part, similar to the style achieved using a traditional bristle brush and china ink.

As I mentioned before, filling up areas that need to be solid black or any other color , is a very practical use of this tool, rather than scribbling all around with a regular brush until the whole area is covered up. The pencil method makes it cleaner and precise. Here you can see, how these techniques work together. Notice the dynamism of the whole, when you combine thin and thick lines , clean and rough brush strokes.

The idea is to create a sensation of depth and light to our sketch. In this case I usually build the interior details from thinner to thick. Advanced Illustration 1 , includes some cool brushes to create hatching effects like in the image above. It will only take a little more time. Then I just follow the sketch lines, to keep building up the torso and the rest, using different brushes combined.

Notice how the strong shadows make some areas to stand out. Again, the subtlety or the lack of it when adding strong shadows depends on you. When you separate the main shapes black from the details magenta , somehow, the work seems less intimidating.

This is a very time-consuming stage and there are no big shortcuts to get it done, but there are tools that can make the process more fun and frustration-free. Like in the case of the belt. The path can be created from any line, curve or shape drawn using any of the line or shape tools and allows you to explore a whole range of diverse typographical designs.

You can now link resources in Designer and Photo just like you can in Publisher, opening up collaborative workflow possibilities and reducing document file sizes. Organize layers more efficiently by selecting all objects of a certain type all symbols, all pixel layers, any shapes without a stroke, etc within your document to make editing them even easier.

Instead of remaining embedded within the document, any pixel layers you have in Affinity Publisher can now be converted to an image, which can also now be linked or packaged as a resource.

This new feature opens up creative and practical techniques like correcting color casts, enhancing infrared imagery and augmenting live filters. You now have the ability to link your apps with your Affinity account and download all of your content from the store directly to your apps.

In addition to our already amazing PSD handling, when placing a PSD, Affinity Publisher now uses the flattened bitmap representation in the file rather than interpreting the file content itself. This will provide much better results without needing to have the correct fonts installed. You can still choose to edit the layers of the placed PSD should you wish. Save your favourite workspace setups for different tasks and easily switch between them. Additional controls now make it possible to avoid flowing text onto both sides of a curve and to hide overflowing path text if desired.

You can now change the color of the bleed and margin guides in your documents. When opening an Affinity document with artboards in Publisher, it will no longer automatically prompt to convert to spreads. It will open as an artboard document, but you can convert at any time through the option in the pages panel.

You can now see and edit the scale percentage of any placed files in the context toolbar previously only available for images.

The curves adjustment now gives X and Y readout values for each node on the graph, allowing you to make incredibly precise numeric adjustments.
