Often there are additional tips or cautions at the end of each task as well. The book is written in a concise, informative manner with each of the topics covered in a page or two. The illustrations are well labeled and help in understanding the instructions. This is not a “How To Edit” book, it is a book to help accomplish specific tasks in editing on Avid software. It would help to have a basic understanding of Media Composer to get full use of the information but beginners could follow the instructions and still accomplish the “recipe.

This is a great book to pick up a new technique or rediscover ones that have been put aside. After acquiring media, the book explains pretty linearly how to set-up your workspace, make cuts, maintain sync, mix audio and use multiple cameras. Each chapter and topics starts with an overview, following by a “how to do it” section followed by an example followed by a “there’s more” section. Hershleder clearly has been in the business for a long time as he approaches each idea from a real-world perspective–not simply a software instructor point of view. Particularly useful is the appendix sections, which has many tips.

The only thing lacking in this book is a good overall tool menu and explanation of each mode and tool as well as a list of keyboard shortcuts. However, this problem is minimized by the numerous options that exist on the Internet. Also, people who do not have MC6 will be hard-pressed to understand what might be different in their version of the software, but Avid, as a company, is really good about keeping things consistent between versions with the exception of major updates, like the smart tool that was introduced a few versions back.

Overall, this book is a fantastic value for anyone who needs to learn Media Composer 6. Don’t be intimidated and wait for Final Cut to become obsolete. Take the Avid plunge and buy this book. Fantastic book, a friend got this for me as a gift as I am starting out on an avid.

I thought I was going to hate this because of the cookbook title but I ordered it as the official Avid literature wasn’t available in Uk as a download and I was in a real rush sorry about the pun. This manual gave me a very direct route to achieving what I had to do in a short space of time.

This included arranging and setting up bins, to capturing from DV tape and then to a assembling rushes, adding BITC and outputting to Quicktime movie files the director can watch on his MacBook.

The book is basically a series of well written flowcharts, covering some very likely portions of workflow in MC 6. This worked for me and will suit you if you haven’t the time to work your way through every angle of the software, as the Avid training manuals want you to do I have since bought one of them and this confirms my opinion on this – Media Composer 6: Professional Picture and Sound Editing.
