Indigestion or stomach upset is an umbrella term used for a group of digestive symptoms like Pain, feeling of burning or upper belly discomfort, feeling uncomfortably full after eating. It also includes burping , gas, nausea, regurgitation, gurgling in your stomach. If they are occurring occasionally, it may be normal but if they are regular or persistent then it may be a sign of an underlying disease. These symptoms can last for only a few minutes or for couple of hours after eating . Swallowing a lot of air when we eat or drink may cause burping and bloating . Chest pain due to indigestion usually occurs after meals, and is persistant, may get partially relieved with walking.
Indigestion usually occurs after eating a large or fatty meal due to irritation in the stomach, and is common in people with sedentary lifestyle. Some common trigger foods are fried food, spicy food, acid containing food like citrus fruits, vinegar, fizzy drinks , caffeine, alcohol. Other causes include certain drugs, some underlying medical problems like ulcers, infections, food intolerances. Smoking and other tobacco products can also aggrevate indigestion. Indigesion is also common in pregnancy.
Indigestion prevention-
Eat and drink slowly, avoid talking while eating and fizzy drinks.
Avoid smoking, eating tobacco and consuming alcohol.
Follow healthy lifestyle like plenty of water, fruits, green veggies , regular meals, avoiding trigger foods and stress.
Regular exercise
Take a walk after meals rather than immediately lying down.
Sleep with ur head elevated [at least 6 inches].
Maintain a healthy weight
Manage stress
If symptoms are not improving or worsening , difficulty in swallowing , tightness in chest , breathlessness, recurrent vomitings, blood in vomit , weight loss then consult ur doctor.
